Anne Marchant

I am an ex-pom who settled here in 1968, worked as an architectural draughtsperson, then as a Polytech tutor, then retired to the Marlborough Sounds, I returned to Christchurch and joined the gallery in 2015.

“Nature I loved, and after nature, art” as the poet said. My preferred subjects are landscapes, wildlife, flowers and trees and the occasional old building. As a youngster I did watercolours and pencil and ink drawings but now I do mainly acrylic, out of respect for the forces of nature. Acrylic doesn’t need glass in front of it and can survive falling off the wall. I have been criticised by some visitors for working from photos instead of outdoors from nature. I find acrylic too slow and messy for doing outdoors. Besides, I take almost all the photos I work from, and the photo is part of the process of the painting, just like the canvas and paint.
